Vancouver Basketball Pro-Am

The Vancouver Basketball Pro-Am feature player of the week is Casey Archibald of Academy. One of the most prolific scorers in UBC history, ranking 2nd all time with 3,024 points, Casey was a five-time Canada West All-Star, two-time Canada West Player of The Year and two-time CIS (now USports) All-Canadian. Casey holds the record with most three pointers made and attempted in a season shooting 117/297 good for 39% in 2004/2005.

In his five years at UBC, Casey and the Thunderbirds made the CIS Final 8 four times and won two Canada West Titles. After graduating from UBC with a Human Kinetics degree, Casey played four seasons professionally overseas.

Upon finishing his professional career overseas, Casey signed on as the full-time assistant coach for the UBC Thunderbirds where he spent two years on the bench for the Thunderbirds before becoming a realtor.

VB: You’ve played years and years of basketball. Do you have one cherished memory that stands out?

CA: I’ve been playing basketball since I was in Grade 7 so I have many cherished memories. It’s very tough to pinpoint one. What does come to mind instantly are the time I spent with my teammates off the court and the battles we had together on the court. For one more specific memory, I’d say winning a Championship in my second season in Europe was pretty epic after one of the hardest seasons that I had professionally. A Championship makes the 10 month grind all worth it.

VB: Having spent time as a Coach at UBC in addition to your playing career, what is something you wish you understood at a deeper level while playing?

CA: I’ve learned that basketball truly is a game played worldwide and that we are in a bubble in Vancouver/Canada. There is so much talent in the world that we never get exposed to or a chance to see (beyond the USA now). I would have loved to have had a chance to play against talent from outside of Canada and get coached by non Canadian style coaches at a younger age. Specifically, it would have taught me how to take care of my body at an earlier age.... and learn how to play off ball screens!

Casey and Academy will play the Falcons in the second semi-final game this Monday September 17th at the Richmond Olympic Oval tipping-off at 8:00pm.
